‘We are gladdened because of your visit. In the old days, we had a king of our own. Here is the sceptre and titles granted by the ancient Perumals to him. We are giving them to you. We are about 30,000, all joined together. We desire that the King of Portugal should rule over us. We shall judge our culprits only in his name in future’. (പേജ്13, Gundert: Kerala Pazhama Translation by T. Madhava Menon, 2003, International School of Dravidian Linguistics, Thiruvananthapuram)

The Journal of Literature and Scienceന്‍റെ ഒന്നാം വാല്യത്തില്‍. 1833 ഒക്ടോബര്‍ മുതല്‍ 1834 ഡിസംബര്‍ വരെയുള്ള ലക്കങ്ങള്‍ ഈ ഗ്രന്ഥത്തില്‍ ഉണ്ട്. അതില്‍ വിലപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ലേഖനം ഉണ്ട് - 'An Historical account of the Christians on the Malabar coast, by the Venerable Archdeacon T. Robinson A.M.'.
'The christians (sic) by this long course of the prosperity became so powerful that they threw of the yoke of the heathen princes, and elected a king of their own nation. The first who bore that title, "The King of Christians of St. Thomas", was Baliarte.
Baliarte? Kerala: A Portrait of the Malabar Coast എന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥം.
"...but at least one important chiefly family of Kshatriya rank, the Rajas of Villarvattam in the Cochin area, accepted Christianity and maintained the religion until their line died out just before the arrival of the Portuguese; the tomb of the last Christian Raja of Villarvattam is still preserved in the ancient church of Udayamperur". (പേജ് 115, Kerala; A Portrait of the Malabar Coast, by George Woodcock, 1967, Faber & Faber, London)
".........until one of them, who according to the custom of the country had adopted the king of Diamper, died without issue, and the heathen king of Diamper succeeded peaceably to all his rights. After this, in consequence of similar adoption, they passed under the sovereignty of the king of Cochin, to whom the greater part of them were subject on the arrival of the Portuguese in India."

The Mar Thomas, or Thomas Cana, whom I have just mentioned was an Armenian merchant of great wealth and noble family, who came and settled in Travancore, probably about the fifth century, although Gouvea the Portuguese historian, makes him the contemporary of Perumal. He carried on an extensive traffic in the produce of the country and built two houses one in the south in the kingdom of Cranganore (കൊടുങ്ങലൂര്‍?) the other in the north, probably at Angamale (അങ്കമാലി?) or the immediate neighbourhood. In the former of these his wife resided, and in the latter, a christian (sic) slave with whom he lived. By each of these he had children, and at his death he left to his legitimate offspring his lands and possessions in the south, and to his natural children all his property in the north. The present christians (sic) in Travancore trace their descent from this Mar Thomas, and of course those of the south are more noble. So proud are they of this distinction, that they do not intermarry with others nor admit them to communion in their churches, nor use the ministry of their priests."

‘We are indeed Christians; we wish to board your ship and visit Europa, Roma and go to Orslem (Jerusalem). In response to Cabral’s enquiries, they narrated their history: ‘We have heard that Thomas Sleaha had visited this country and built churches. In the churches, we do not have idols; only the Cross. Now, it is the Catholics of Suriya who sends our bishops. The vicars wear their tuft of hair as the insignia. Babies are baptized on the 40th day. Pollution is observed for 8 days after death. We observe many fasts. The Feast of St. Thomas on 1st July is the most important. We have many scriptures and their commentaries. Learned men among us teach the children from them. We settled in this self-same Kodungallur from a long time ago. There are also Jews, Misra, Parsee and Arabi merchants here. We also adopt trade as our means of livelihood. We had to pay dues to the king of Kodungallur’.

"The first notice which Europe received of the Christians of St. Thomas, after the revival of learning, was from Pedro Alvares Cabral or Cabrera, who commanded the fleet of Emmanuel, king of Portugal, in the year 1500. In his war with Samorin (സാമൂതിരി), he met with several of the Christians, and two of them, brothers accompanied him to Portugal. The eldest, Matthias, died at Lisbon; the younger, Joseph, went from thence to Rome, and afterwards to Venice, where an account was published, from the information he furnished, of the church of Malabar, which is found at the end of Fasciculus temporum."

മുഴുവന്‍ പേര് പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ Fasciculus temporum omnes antiquorum cronicas complectens - ലാറ്റിനില്‍ Encylopaedia of History എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞതാന്നേ.

India in 1500 A.D.: the narratives of Joseph, the Indian.
"In Rome he had an audience with the Pope and in Venice he was received by the illustrious Signoria of Venice. With Pope Alexander VI he discussed the questions of the relations of the Malabar Church to the Pope of Rome and the Chaldean Patriarch. With the Signoria of Venice he discussed the socio-economic conditions of Kerala."
Joseph was an Indian by nationality, a native of Cranganore, in Kerala, dark coloured and medium size. He was born in 1461 and at the time when he was in Lisbon (1501) he was about forty years old. He was an ingenious man of high truthfulness who detested nothing so much as telling lies, a sober and reasonable man of exemplary life, of high integrity and remarkable friendliness.
